All Quiet On The Western Front - Erich Maria Remarque

I post this iconic novel, that I'm reading at the moment, naughty I know but I just couldn't resist it. This is an absolute classic, which should be read by everybody irrespective of their view of war & conflict. I hasten to add that I am a pacifist should anyone wonder :)

Paul Baumer enlisted with his classmates in the German army of World War I. Youthful, enthusiastic, they become soldiers. But despite what they have learned, they break into pieces under the first bombardment in the trenches. And as horrible war plods on year after year, Paul holds fast to a single vow: to fight against the principles of hate that meaninglessly pits young men of the same generation but different uniforms against each other--if only he can come out of the war alive.

A treatise on the pointless futility of modern warfare, that at once captivates the reader with it's mesmerising portrayal of the life of German soldiers at war in the trenches of WW1.
