Police recover £8.5m, but there's still £45m to find

Millions of pounds stolen in Britain’s biggest robbery have been recovered by detectives who raided a garage in southeast London.

Armed officers searched ENR Cars on Thursday afternoon and are reported to have recovered £7 million of the money stolen from the Securitas depot in Tonbridge, Kent, in the early hours of Wednesday last week. Police are now believed to have recovered £8.5million, which leaves £45 million still missing.

Nigel Reeves, the owner of the business, in Welling, flew to Spain with his family last week. He told The Times that he had contacted police after a friend called him to say that his yard had been raided. “I am in contact with Kent Police and if they want me to come back it’s not a problem,” he said. “I am not involved in this. I sub-let it to two other people. I know them personally but I am not prepared to give their names until I’ve spoken to police.

“If it’s anything to do with that yard, it could be that someone has thrown a bag of money over the wall. I heard about it on the television. My mate telephoned me to say the industrial estate was blocked off. I was told that someone who worked for me had been arrested.

“I spoke to my nephew, who is a policeman, and asked his advice and then called police. I sub-let it over a year ago. They bought and sold cars. I did some work on those vehicles. “The police have been in touch and I’m trying to sort it out. That’s all I want to say.”

The small workshop and its yard, which is divided into two, is at the rear of the Graves Estate and is made up of a large number of workshops run by car mechanics. According to workers in the units, the workshop is rented from ENR Cars by Northfleet Transit Specialists, although a man at the company denied any involvement with ENR Cars.

A 43-year-old man was arrested at the workshop on suspicion of handling stolen goods. Two other men — the fourth and fifth charged in connection with the robbery — appeared before Maidstone magistrates yesterday charged with conspiracy to commit robbery. Lea Rusha, 33, a roofer from Southborough, Tunbridge Wells, and Jetmir Bucpapa, 24, from Tonbridge, were both remanded in custody to appear at Maidstone Crown Court on March 13.

Officers are searching for the stolen money at Elderden Farm in Staplehurst, Kent. They have recovered tens of thousands of pounds at the farm, owned by John Fowler, who has been charged with conspiracy to rob and kidnapping the depot manager, Colin Dixon, his wife, Lynn, and their son Craig. Police also raided Wateringbury Car Centre in Wateringbury, near Maidstone.
