Thursday, August 11, 2005 I listened to a fascinating program this morning about the world's oceans. The synopsis is - The World's Oceans have the power to influence our climate. Huge currents transport water and heat which circulates across the globe. But what happens if the system shuts down? Scientists say there's a one in three chance of this happening in the North Atlantic, causing abrupt climate change worldwide with much colder weather for the east coast of North America and Western Europe. Richard Hollingham examines the scientific evidence behind such predictions and asks if we can plan to minimize the impact in this week's One Planet. The link is, if you want to listen to it - One Planet Times Article The Gulf Stream ![]() I listened to the program with a mix of fascination & interest. I have alway's been interested in evnvironmental stuff. The concept of massive climate shift, because of a change in the undersea conveyor 'gulf stream' is becoming more & more a possibility. The stark fact that this could effect us all in Europe within 50 years is frightening. I have alway's felt that this topic was interesting but the time scale was a new one on me. The possible global effect's & possible shifts in the global power balance as a result of this happening are something which we should all take very seriously. Already we are starting to feel the result of high oil prices here in the UK. The highest oil prices in my lifetime !. In some ways we are protected from the worst effects of rises by the high tax our government places on petrol some 45% at the current time.Currently some 60% of our electricity comes from natural gas power stations. With North sea gas reserves winding down we are becoming dependant on gas imported via a huge gas pipeline which comes from Russia, we are right at the end of it. If anything were to happen the light's could go out. This does not bear thinking about, & I am more and more convinced that our government need to get off the fence and commission the next generation of nuclear power stations so we can end our reliance on foreign imports of fuel. Maximizing renewable power resources like wind & tidal in combination with the above is I am convinced the way to go. Just a thought, this is in some way's part of the political side of my life which I have not talked about yet but more to follow. Charlie hewitt.mobi Posted at 1:44 pm |
